The runic alphabet

The runes of the Elder Futhark are twenty-four carved symbols — an alphabet used across the Norse and Germanic world for over a thousand years, as much for meaning as for writing. Each rune is a word in itself: Fehu, cattle and wealth; Uruz, the wild ox and raw strength; Ansuz, breath and message; Algiz, the elk and protection.

Cast for divination, the runes answer the way stone answers — briefly, and without decoration.

How a rune reading works

A reading begins, as all readings here do, with the question. Runes reward precision: the sharper the question, the cleaner the answer. Zeita will help you whittle a tangled situation down to the thing actually being asked.

The runes are then drawn — from the bag, or cast onto cloth — and read in turn:

• A single rune for a question that wants a single answer
• Three runes for the classic cast: what lies behind, what is present, which way the current runs
• A wider cast for situations with many moving parts

Each symbol is named and explained as it is read, so the reading lands in plain language, not in mystery.

When runes are the right tool

Runes suit the moments when you already half-know the answer and need it said plainly. Where a tarot reading unfolds a whole landscape, the runes drive a single stake into the ground. Many clients use both across different seasons — tarot when the question is wide, runes when it has narrowed.
